During my time at the Financial Times, I gained an in-depth understanding of print journalism. I shadowed various departments, immersing myself in and helping out with the editorial process from start to finish, which gave me a comprehensive view of how stories are pitched, researched, edited, and published. I learned the importance of open dialogue and collaboration between editorial teams, reporters, and designers, ensuring that each piece aligns with the outlet’s standards.

I also gained insight into the different modes of journalism at the FT, including business, politics, and magazine journalism, and how each requires its own unique approach in terms of style, tone, and deadlines. This experience helped me understand the FT's audience and how to craft stories that meet the needs of a professional and highly informed readership. This experience was invaluable in shaping my approach to print journalism and reinforced the critical role of precision, consistency, and timely delivery in the newsroom.

A highlight of my experience at the Financial Times was meeting Roula Khalaf, the first female editor in the publication’s 100-year history. Her ability to balance leadership with motherhood, and the broader discussion around the gendered choice many women face between career and family—something that men seldom encounter—deeply resonated with me. This experience inspired my article, ‘To Work or To Nurture: A Gendered Choice in Focus,’ where I explored the challenges and implications of this choice. I’ve found that some of my best work is shaped by the experiences I encounter, and I enjoy observing the world around me to extract meaningful stories.
